manuscript in the Town Clerk's Office of Woodstock,

entitled "COMPLETE RECORD, As Required by

Chapter 690, of the Laws of 1865, Relating To

Officers. Soldiers and Seamen, Composing the

Quotas of the Troops Furnished to The United

States, by the Town of Woodstock, County of

Ulster, State of New York, In the War of the

Rebellion, and covering the period from the 15th

day of April, 1861, to the date of the certificate of

the Town Clerk, attached to this record. Prepared

by Edgar Snyder, Town Clerk." (The certificate, on

the last page of the volume, is dated 1865. No day

or month is noted.)

The records below are of special value for the information they provide about Woodstockers serving during the time of the Civil War. They are also of important value because of the additional information relating to the dates and places of their births and deaths, the battles in which they fought, and the names of their parents. The listing below has been transcribed in alphabetical order and every care has been taken to present all facts given in the original manuscript. Notes in brackets have been added from other sources, when available, to complete or correct some statements. Much of the original transcription was completed by Louise H. Zimm. Digital transcription was been completed in 2004 by Eliza Heppner and Richard Heppner, Woodstock Town Historian.

JOHN WHITEBACK DAVIS, b. Woodstock Apr. 17, 1844, parents John W. Davis, Caroline Longyear. Private 120th. Enlisted in 14th aug. 1862 for 3 yrs. Mustered 24th Aug. 1862 at W. White. Single. After serving 18 months and taking part in the Battles of Fredricksberg, Chancellorville, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Wilderness, and Spotsylvania, at which place he was taken prisoner, sent to Andersonville, G(a)., and remained at this prison until the Rebellion was ended. (He died in late 1930's).

LORY JOHNSON, b. Woodstock Nov. 9, 1844, parents William Johnson, Eleanor Elting. Private 20th N.Y., Co. I. Enlisted Sept. 24, 1861 at W. For 3 yrs. White. Blacksmith. Discharged 9th Feb. 1863 by reason of Surgeon's certificate of disability, having been in 7 battles, together with the battle of Bull Run. P.O., Bears Ville.

ALONZO SYLVESTER LEWIS, b. Woodstock Jan. 21, 1843, parents William P. Lewis, Sarah Tripp. Private 120th N.Y. Enlisted at W. Aug. 15, 1862 for 3 yrs. White. Died at Richmond Va., (Feb. 20, 1864, aged 21 yrs., 1 month. per marker in W. Village Cemetery). Having been in battles of Gettysburgh, Fredricksburgh, and others, and in Libby Prison 4 months.

Woodstock (For an interesting account of the above McDaniel Family see W.H.S. Publications IV, pp, 17-19 by Anita M. Smith. Elizabeth (Besty) Booth McDaniel was a well known herb doctor who sent cases for her cholera syrup to her sons to heal their ailing comrades during the Civil War.)

JAMES MOSHER, b. Woodsock Mar. 27, 1848, parents James Mosher, Mary Vosberg, Private 156 N.Y., Co. B. Enlisted Aug. 19th 1862 at W. For 3 yrs. Mustered Oct. 19, 1862. White. Merchant. Having been in Port Hudson Battle and killed in the battle of Cedar Creek.

JOHN WILLIAM PLIMLEY, b. Woodstock 27th Aug. 1835, parents George Plimley, Mariah Plimley. Private 20th re., Co. I. Enlisted Sept. 15, 1861 at Saugerties for 3 yrs. Mustered 19th Sept. 1861. White. Discharged 23d Sept. 1864, having been in service full term of enlistment. Having been in the Battle of Gettysburg, being wounded in hand.

PHILIP HENRY PLOSS, b. Woodstock Sept. 16, 1844, parents James Ploss, Polly Jackson. Private 107th, Co. E. Enlisted at W. July 21, 1862 for 3 yrs. White. Single. Laborer. Mustered out the service with Regt. June 5th 1865. P.O. Woodstock.

RODMAN WESTBROOK REYNOLDS, b. Woodstock 12th Oct., 1842, parents Isaac Reynolds, Elisa Stevens. Private 15th Eng., Co. E. Enlisted Jan. 4th 1864 at W. for 3 yrs. White. Single. Bounty paid by Town of W. $350. Discharged 1st July 1865. P. O. Woodstock.

ARON NEWKIRK RISELEY, b. Woodstock 16th Feb. 1844, parents Cornelius Risely, Jane Elting. "Both now living." Private 120th Regt. Enlisted Aug. 14, 1862 at W. for 3 yrs. Mustered at W. 22nd Aug. 1862. White. Single. After serving 15 months and taking part in the Battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorville, Gettysburg, he was, taken prisoner near James City was sent to Libby Prison (3 months) Belle Island (3 months), thence to Andersonville, Ga. (7 months) thence to Savannah, Ga. 1 month, thence to Lawton, Ga., 2 months, thence to Andersonville, Ga. until the end of the Rebellion.

JACOB SHULTIS, b. Woodstock Sept. 6th, 1828, parents Henry Shultis, Elizabeth Rick. Private 15th N. Y., Co. E. Enlisted at W. Jan. 12th, 1864 for 3 yrs. White. Farmer. Died June 25th 1864 of disease acquired in the Army.

Discharged 24th April 1862 under certificate of surgeon, having been in service 7 months. Reenlisted at Kingston for 3 yrs. or during war, Private Battery K., U. S. Artillery.
