Woodstock's Coal Mine

The Woodstock Coal Mine

These two man-made shafts, which exist on the lower level of Overlook Mountain, date back to the 1800s.  As the nation turned from wood burning to other sources of energy, few areas were spared in the search for "alternative" energy.  Efforts in Woodstock to find rich deposits of coal, however, met with little success.  The shaft on the left (above) is approximately 30 feet deep, the one on the right - about 20 feet.  On the left, Dave Holden and Howie Lipson of the Recreation Commission debate who will enter first.  Lower right photo shows interior of larger cave.
Below Left: A large rock slab which has slid down between the openings of two mine shafts. Below Right: Opening between slab and mountain's rock face.
